Pool closure plans considered

PLANS to close Sutton swimming pool are under consultation as a result of unprecedented funding cuts from central Government.

Should the pool close, the schools swimming and swimming lessons which it is predoiminantly used for would transfer to the newly-refurbished Parr pool.

It would also save St Helens Council £180,000 a year.

A recent survey of local authority swim provision showed that St Helens continued to offer more than many of its neighbouring councils.

As well as the Parr pool, the council also has pools at the brand new Queens Park Fitness Centre and the Selwyn Jones leisure complex in Newton-le-Willows.

St Helens Council’s budget has been slashed by more than 40 per cent in the last two years and left Town Hall chiefs struggling to balance the books.

The authority has already had to find £50m worth of savings - including the loss of more than 1,000 jobs - and faces a further £10m worth of cuts next year.
