Tardy book borrowers can clear their library fines with food donations instead of money after council chiefs in Merseyside launched a food bank scheme to help residents who are struggling to make ends meet.

Those with late fines up to £50 can reduce the price of their payment by £1 for every donation of a food item with a long shelf life.

St Helens Council will be running the project until December 31.
