POLICE in St Helens are urging motorists to on their guard following a spate of opportunist thefts.

Nine incidents have been reported over the past seven days in Bold, Clock Face and Sutton, with thieves stealing sat navs and work tools.

Insp Peter Mallett said: “There has been a steep rise in these incidents recently and most are due to drivers leaving their vehicles unlocked when they pop into a shop.

“Many of these thefts are so easily preventable if drivers remember to keep their car locked even though they are only away for a few minutes.”

Other incidents include £400 taken from a wallet left on a dashboard and £1,000 taken from hold all in an unsecure vehicle. And £700 cash was taken from a van in Bold.
