The 25-year-old pedestrian suffered fatal injuries in the incident involving a Range Rover on the northbound carriageway between junction 23 at Haydock and junction 24 at Ashton.

Officers from Merseyside Police were called to the scene at around 10.50pm on Friday July 1.

The force said the pedestrian has not yet been formally identified but is thought to be from the Wigan area.

The driver of the Range Rover stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries. The M6 was closed for several hours following the collision.

Some motorists were stuck on the northbound carriageway for more than an hour before North West Motorway Police officers briefly opened the inside lane to allow the trapped vehicles through.

Police investigations are ongoing.
