POET Laureate Carol Ann Duffy beguiled audiences at St Helens Central Library with a spellbinding reading of some of her best-known works.

Library bosses were forced to close tickets applications for her performances days before it was due to close because interest for the October 7 event was so high.

Community Development Manager Kathryn Boothroyd said: “It took us the best part of 12 months to secure Carol Ann’s appearance at Central Library – but we persevered and it was well worth all the effort.

“The event was a huge success and underlined the importance of libraries as places where we can showcase this level of talent.”
