Roads were closed in St Helens today after a crash involving a police car.

Emergency services closed the East Lancs Road between the junction of Rainford Road and Crank Road.

The crash happened at Windle Island at around 1.30pm.

It involved a police car and a white Suzuki Swift.

A passenger in the Suzuki, a man in his 50s, was treated at the scene suffering from shock.

The road was closed for around three hours while council officers cleared up a large fuel spill.

A police spokesman said the Professional Standards Department would now take place into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
