The police and the courts are to be congratulated for the tough stance they have taken on dodgy Rainhill businessman Terence Jackson.

In years gone by many crooks like Jackson would have ultimately had the last laugh despite being jailed for their crimes because they had siphoned off piles of cash in various secret accounts of which the authorities had no knowledge.

Nowadays, thanks to increasingly sophisticated forensic accounting practices, and a new determination by our law enforcement agencies, increasing numbers of ex-lags can no longer dream of leaving prison to find a happy nest-egg of ill-gotten gains waiting for them.

Instead, after Jackson has paid up the £40k-plus he swindled out of the taxman, he'll leave prison with precisely what he deserves in his pockets ... diddly swat.
