Few tears for divisive Thatcher

NOT many tears are likely to be shed for Margaret Thatcher in St Helens.

But, as ex Sutton Manor miner Gary Conley points out, to celebrate the former Prime Minister’s death is taking things a step too far.

Of course, Thatcher was instrumental in bringing down the UK mining industry after tackling the powerful unions head-on.

It can be argued that the shape of the economy was already in dire need of change. But the speed and ruthlessness of the change shocked whole communities, like Sutton Manor, to the core.

Whether you agree with her politics or not, you can’t deny her influence and her power to divide opinion.
