OAP cyclist ‘critical’ after hit and run

A cyclist in his 80s is in a critical condition after he was knocked off his bike by a hit and run driver in Newton-le-Willows this afternoon.

Police say the incident took place on Belvedere Road between Crow Lane East and Silverdale Road at around 1.55pm.

Officers have closed the road while investigations continue.

The pensioner was riding a motorised bicycle when he collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa.

The driver of the Corsa then fled the scene, a force spokesman said.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.

His condition is described as critical.

Police are now attempting to trace the Corsa driver.
