Neighbours told of their shock after a man was shot on a remote country road in Rainhill.

Police were called to Blundell’s Lane, near to Blundell’s Hill Golf Club, shortly after 8pm on Tuesday (January 13).

A 24-year-old local man had been shot in what Matrix team anti-gun detectives believe was a “targeted attack”.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

One resident, who asked not to be identified, said: “I didn’t see or hear anything so I was shocked when I saw that the police had blocked the road and cars were having to turn around and head back towards St Helens.

“I normally let the dog out at about 8.30pm but I didn’t on that night because she had gone missing for a while the previous night. I’m glad I didn’t now.”

Another commented: “It’s shocking. I thought there had been a car crash - I didn’t realise it was a shooting. This is the last place you would think something like that would happen.”

Forensic examinations in the area are ongoing and anyone who has information can contact police on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
