HE is, quite simply, the pride of St Helens.
Martin Murray’s (pictured, right with Martinez) epic performance against the great middleweight champion Sergio Martinez electrified not only the town, but the entire boxing world.
Despite dumping Martinez to the canvas twice during a thrilling world title contest in Argentina on Saturday night, the judges saw fit to award the fight to the home fighter, shocking most seasoned boxing experts.
Murray’s promoter Ricky Hatton said the St Helens ace had been robbed of his rightful prize.
“I think Martin should be the middleweight champion of the world,” said Hatton. “It was a good competitive fight but there was only one winner for me.”
There were calls today for Murray to be afforded a public homecoming welcome.
Saints ace and Murray fan Ade Gardner said: “Martin put so much effort into that fight. To go out to Argentina and run their hero so close was unbelievable.
