A FORMER soldier is set to face a murder retrial.

Following an eight-day Liverpool Crown Court trial, jurors were unable to reach a verdict on whether Stephen Barry Thomas, 25, murdered St Helens man Darren Bolger (pictured below) in a town centre flashpoint earlier this year.

Thomas, of no fixed abode but originally from Wigan, admitted punching and kicking the 40-year-old in an alleyway off Parr Street, but insisted it was just a “fight that had gone wrong”.

Mr Bolger was found collapsed, suffering from serious head injuries, in an fenced alleyway near to the Salvation Army’s Salisbury House hostel on the afternoon of January 27.

He was taken to Whiston Hospital for emergency treatment, but died later that day.

Thomas has now been further remanded in custody after High Court judge Mrs Justice Sharp fixed a retrial at Liverpool Crown Court for December 12.
