SHAUN Woodward MP met with Health Minister Simon Burns MP this week to discuss the future of Whiston and St Helens Hospitals.

Mr Woodward, the MP for St Helens South and Whiston, also sought assurances from the Chief Executive of the Strategic Health Authority, NHS North West, Mike Ogden.

A document leaked earlier this year suggested that privatisation of both hospitals was an option due to a funding shortfall.

But Mr Woodward said: “Both meetings gave me the chance to ensure that the Government and the Strategic Health Authority are fully briefed on the very real concerns my constituents have about proposed changes to fund Whiston and St Helens Hospitals.

“I continue to be reassured that privatisation is not an option for the Government.”

He added: “However I remain concerned that we find a sensible and practical solution to the funding issues facing the hospitals, which neither sacrifices services or the core principles of the NHS.

“I am grateful for the time of the Minister and Chief Executive and we have agreed to meet again in the coming weeks.”
