Labour have elected former council leader Marie Rimmer to be their candidate to be the next MP for St Helens South.

Current MP Shaun Woodward has already announced his decision to stand down at next year’s General Election.

Coun Rimmer was part of a three-strong, all-woman shortlist which also includes St Helens-born London councillor Catherine McDonald and Manchester councillor June Hitchen.

There was a hustings meeting and vote at Thatto Heath Labour Club.

Around 200 of the 300-plus members of the St Helens South and Whiston Labour Group participated in the ballot.
