A HEARTBROKEN fiancee has paid tribute to her “one of a kind” soul mate after he was killed in a horror motorway crash - just a day before his 21st birthday.

Stephen Bennett, fondly known to friends as Benno, was pronounced dead at the scene after his car span off the M6 near to the M55 slip road in the early hours of Saturday (August 27).

In a tribute page set up on the Facebook social networking website, the Saints fan’s devastated fiancee, Lisa Howard, vowed that he would “never be forgotten”.

She posted: “Happy 21st birthday babe. One day before your birthday you were sadly taken away from us all.

“We all love and miss you - words can’t describe how much we all do. You were one of a kind - special, caring, loving, you weren’t just my fiance, you were also my best friend, my soul mate.

“I still can’t believe your gone babe, but you will never be forgotten. You will always be in my heart, right at the top because that’s how much I love you.

“Nobody can replace the feeling I’ve got for you. Love you babe. God bless xxx.”

Police were called to the M55 slip road, near Preston, at about 1am after receiving reports that a black Fiat Punto had been involved in a crash.

When the emergency services arrived at the scene, there was nothing they could do to save Mr Bennett.

Police later confirmed that two passengers, who were also in the car at the time, escaped with minor injuries.

Inspector Damian Kitchen, from the region’s road policing unit said, “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and contact the police.

“Mr Bennett’s family have been notified of the news and we have specially trained officers supporting them through what is a very difficult time.”

Among the string of other tributes posted on Facebook in Mr Bennet’s honour was one from Sarah Stevenson, which read: “Happy 21st birthday darling. I hope God made your day as special as it would have been down here.

“God really does only take the best. Sweet dreams, sleep tight x.”

Another, from Emma Clayton-Poole, read: “Happy 21st birthday chuck. You were one in a million. We’re all going to miss your cheekyness. Sleep tight Benno x.”

And Kimberly Molyneux simply posted: “You should be here to celebrate this milestone of a birthday. What a cruel, cruel world we live in. Happy birthday xxx.”
