A MIDDLE-aged man was found collapsed in his home after emergency crews were called to a house fire in St Helens town centre.
Paramedics tended to John McNicholas, 51, after he was found collapsed at his home on Standish Street at about 9am last Wednesday (September 21).
Tragically, he was pronounced dead at hospital later that day.
Neighbours told the Reporter that the emergency services had been called to his address following a gas fire explosion and said they believed that Mr McNicholas had suffered a heart attack.
They added that Mr McNicholas had only moved into the terraced property “a couple of months ago”.
Police cordoned off Standish Street, near to its junction with Brynn Street, and Hall Street following the incident and initially treated Mr McNicholas’s death as “unexplained”.
The cordon was lifted at about 1pm once officers had completed their inquiries.
Mr McNicholas’s next of kin, in Haydock, was informed of the death and a post mortem was due to take place to determine the cause of death.
An inquest into the underlying cause of Mr McNicholas’s death was opened and adjourned last Friday (September 23).
