Man charged over town centre attack

A 21-year-old man has been charged over an attack in St Helens town centre of such severity that the victim could be left blind.

Scott Martin Owens, of Ellison Drive, St Helens was remanded in custody and appeared at Sefton Magistrates Court this morning (Monday).

Owens was arrested following an incident the early hours of Saturday (November 28).

A pasing police patrol saw the 28-year-old victim lying unconscious on William Street.

He had sustained multiple fractures to his face, a possible broken jaw and a fractured eye socket and could lose the sight in his eye.

He has been moved to a specialist eye unit.

Det Insp Paul Grounds said: "We are aware there were a number of people in the vicinity at the time of the incident and would appeal to anyone who saw anything, however insignifcant they may think it is, to contact police.

"We will act on all information we are given."
