A MAN was hospitalised with a serious head injury after an early hours assault near a St Helens taxi rank.
Police say two men, both aged 22, were attacked near a Water Street taxi rank in St Helens town centre at about 2.40am last Thursday (June 27).
The duo had been drinking in a local bar and were their way to a taxi rank when they were grabbed from behind by two men and assaulted.
One of the victims suffered a head injury and cuts to his face.
He is now being treated at Whiston Hospital - where his injuries have been described as “serious” but not life threatening.
The other victim was not seriously injured and is now recovering at home.
DC Mick Bowes said: “This was a particularly nasty attack on two men who had simply been out for a drink. They were attacked from behind and one of them has been seriously injured.
“We think the men might have been drinking in the same bar as their attackers earlier in the evening and we’re examining CCTV from the bar and the area where the attack took place.
“We’re carrying out forensic checks and speaking to people who were in the bar around the time that these men were.
“We’d ask anyone who might know anything or saw anything suspicious to contact us on 0151 777 6882 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.”
