Man arrested over OAP hit and run

A 50-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows has been arrested on suspicion of a hit and run in which a pensioner was knocked off his bike and left in a critical condition.

The man was arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and attention last night (Tuesday).

He is today being interviewed by officers in St Helens.

The victim, who is in his 80s, was riding a motorised bicycle when he collided with a blue Vauxhall Corsa, suffering a serious head injury.

The incident took place on Belvedere Road at around 1.55pm.

He was rushed to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

Police say the driver failed to stop at the scene.

The scene has been sealed to allow forensic investigations to take place and Belvedere Road is closed between Crow Lane East and Silverdale Road.

CCTV opportunities in the area are being explored and an investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the incident is continuing.
