St Helens Central Library is set to host a celebration of Saints all-conquering team.
The side won a total of four trophies, sweeping all before than a style rarely seen.
In honour of the 50th anniversary, Central Library has invited past players from the Saints squad of ‘66 to attend a special event, allowing members of the public the opportunity to hear about their memories of the season first hand.
The festivities on Monday 9 May include:
10am and 1pm: Fans are invited to bring along their Saints memorabilia such as programmes, scarves and jerseys so that Central Library can photograph and document them as part of a Saints digital archive.
Where you in the Boys’ Pen at Knowsley Road for the Wigan game on Good Friday 1966? Come and see if you can find yourself in the enlarged image on display!
Copies of the booklet “Four Cups and All That; St. Helens RFC 1965-66” written by local Saints historians Alex Service, Graham Cunliffe, and Adrian Lawrenson will be available to purchase and fans are encouraged to come and talk to the three authors about past players, matches and the club’s ‘four trophy’ success of 1966, in what will be a superb air of nostalgia.
2pm to 4pm: Fans are invited to attend ‘A tribute to the Boys of 1966’ event in the Local History Library when match highlights of the famous ’66 Wembley appearance against Wigan will be shown, and Alex Service and Peter Harvey will talk about their personal reminiscences using audio and visual memories. The afternoon will conclude with a Q & A session and refreshments.
Saints memorabilia including shirts, newspapers, Wembley seats and the 1966 Town Hall visitors book signed by the ’66 squad, will be on display from Monday, May 9 until Saturday, May 14.
Spaces for the afternoon event are limited so please reserve your place by contacting Central Library on 01744 676954 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
