A LOYAL workman who started working for a St Helens undertaker when he was just 15 has finally called it a day - after 50 years service.
John Howard started out at the W G Dixons funeral service in Bickerstaffe Street, before it relocated to Baxters Lane, Sutton, in the 1990s, under the new name Fisher and Dixon.
At first he worked in the workshop making coffins before progressing to become a funeral service operative.
The 65-year-old, of Rainford, and his wife of 38 years, Joan, were treated to a special retirement buffet to mark his last day with the firm.
Funeral service manager Michelle Davies said: “John was a very popular member of staff and will be missed by all our other staff members.
“We bought him a watch and vouchers for a travel company because they enjoy travelling. We wish him all the best in his retirement and hope he will pop in to see us from time to time.”
