A CAMPAIGN to nominate ex-Saints star Steve Prescott MBE for a prestigious Pride of Britain Award is rapidly gathering pace.
Scores of the former rugby star’s followers on the Twitter social networking website have already made their online nomination.
One follower, Sophie Littler, posted: “Only one person deserves a Pride of Britain Award and that’s the incredible Steve Prescott.”
Another, Jaime O’Leary, agreed: “Damn right. A true hero in every sense of the word.”
But Prekkie, who is battling a rare form of stomach cancer and returned home last week following a seven-week spell in hospital, was typically modest about the prospect.
He tweeted: “Thanks everybody for your thoughts and nominations for the Pride of Britain Awards. But people like me don’t win these awards. You’re all too kind!”
Prekkie, who was awarded the MBE in 2010 for his services to sport and his tireless charity work, also revealed his delight at finally leaving hospital to his legion of Twitter followers last week.
He posted: “Realised that I have some good friends who travelled from near and far to visit me. Thank you and to all the well-wishers for their messages.
“Just been informed that the infection is clear and bloods back to normal.”
