Police are hunting four men after they tried to force their way into a bank using a sledgehammer.

Merseyside Police were called by staff at the HSBC Bank in Eccleston Street, Prescot, this morning, Tuesday, after the men tried to forced their way into the premises using what was described as a sledgehammer.

They did gain entry but made off empty handed shortly afterwards and are believed to have driven off in a dark coloured vehicle down Market Street.

Enquiries are ongoing at the scene and in relation to tracing the suspects’ vehicle.

Detective Inspector Tony Kirk of Knowsley CID said: “This was a frightening incident for the members of staff, and thankfully nobody was hurt.

“We are keen to speak with any members of the public who saw the incident or a dark coloured car, possibly an Audi, in the vicinity of the bank. We believe this car had four men on board and drove away down Market Street.”
