MORE than 500 green-fingered residents took advantage of a free compost giveaway.

As a way of thanking people for taking part in St Helens Council’s green waste recycling scheme, gardeners were able to collect free compost at the former Clock Face Colliery on Gorsey Lane.

Spades were provided but people had to bring their own bags.

In total, more than 250 recycling containers - black boxes, blue bags and pink bags - were taken away.

Coun Joe De’Asha, St Helens Council’s cabinet member for environmental protection, said: “The recycling team found it a really worthwhile event which had a real feel good factor. Residents were really appreciative.”

Comments from the day included: “I live in Garswood and this is the first time I have come to the giveaway, what a great idea!” and: “It’s always good to get something back for our efforts. We recycle all we can and it’s great that it doesn’t go unnoticed by the council.”
