RESIDENTS’ feedback has helped a Helena sheltered accommodation scheme to achieve national recognition for its excellent facilities and services. Helena’s West End Road won a bronze award at the Elderly Accommodation Council’s (EAC) National Housing for Older People’s Awards 2013, in the Best Retirement Housing Scheme (30-44 units) category.
The scheme was nominated not by external judges, but by its residents, who rated the accommodation via a unique card game, which was created by the EAC to gather first hand feedback and scores to determine which sites would win awards.
Over 3,000 residents from across the country scored housing providers based on living environment, services and lifestyle and 295 schemes were shortlisted.
The award was collected at special ceremony held at the National Motorcycle Museum Birmingham by Janet Ruse, Operations Manager for Helena Extra, along with two very special guests, West End Road tenants and buddy group members Doreen Johnson and Joan McDonald.
Janet said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won at the National Housing for Older People’s Awards for the second year in a row. West End Road was up against around 30 others, so it’s a huge achievement to have come away with the bronze award. It’s wonderful to know that great feedback has come directly from our residents too.”
West End Road received glowing feedback from the EAC: “At a time when many older people are living lonely lives, residents who use the facilities at West End Road care about their neighbours and are always inviting new people to join them for social activities and the chance to make new friends. There’s a true community spirit, mutual support and constant laughter.”
