A HANDGUN and ammunition was found buried in a field in Rainhill on Sunday (June 30).
A member of the public reported finding the weapon in a field near Two Butt Lane at about 3.30pm.
Police then carried out a search of the area and not only located the gun, but also a tin of unused ammo.
Forensic experts are now examining the find.
DCI Richie Salter, from the force’s anti-gun Matrix team, said: “Thanks to the information from this member of the public we have recovered a firearm and an amount of ammunition.
“We encourage members of the public to provide information to us about the location of firearms and this is just one example of our commitment to responding to information received.
“We will always take positive action when members of the public share information with us and with their help we can keep taking guns off our streets and put the people who use them behind bars.”
Anyone who has information about those involved in organised crime or gun crime should call Merseyside Police’s Matrix Unit on 0151 777 5687 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
