MEET Sylvia Mitchell – St Helens newest IT whizzkid!

The 65-year-old grandmother enrolled on a course at St Helens College designed to brush up her IT skills.

She loved the subject so much she has gone on to complete two further qualifications – and is now the unofficial resident IT expert at the sheltered housing unit in Cairns Court, Thatto Heath, where she lives with her husband.

Mrs Mitchell said: “I thought college was only about getting into a trade, but it can really help with your personal life. It gets me out of the house and I speak to lots of new people.”

Her new skills allow her to produce Powerpoint slideshows of day trips taken by Cairn Court residents.

And as well as being a whizz on Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Publisher, she is also now in touch with relatives on Facebook and is keeping active with Nintendo Wii Fit, where she scored a Wii Fit age of 42!

She added: “St Helens College is a fantastic place to study and make new friends. I have already gained five new qualifications and my husband is really proud of my success. I have made new friends and out IT group often go for a coffee together.”
