WORK to raze the old Knowsley Road rugby stadium to the ground is undoubtedly a sad sight for all Saints fans.
But rapid, visible building progress at the site of the new stadium will certainly soften the blow.
These pictures, taken at Knowsley Road on Monday (April 4), show the ongoing demolition of Saints’ famous old ground.
Knowsley Road, of course, will forever be the site of so many special memories for Saints die-hards over the years.
It’s demolition will make way for the Cunningham Grange housing development.
But a glimpse at the old United Glass site in St Helens town centre gives fans a sneak preview of an exciting future.
From the perimeter of the site, tall cranes and teams of workmen can be seen carefully piecing together parts of the huge £20m stadium project.
Club chiefs say the stadium is scheduled to be ready for the start of next year’s Super League season.
Work on a new bridge to link the site with the town centre - over the busy A58 Linkway East - is also set to start soon.
