IF you go down to shops today you’re sure of a big surprise!
Shoppers in the town’s B&M Store certainly got a shock when Saints stars Jonny Lomax and Ade Gardner popped in.
Bemused shoppers then watched as Jonny clambered on to a child’s tricycle before scootering down the aisle.
The visit the Church Street store as part of a campaign to bolster town centre business.
Earlier, the pair had joined pupils from Allanson Street Primary School to unveil a giant pavement graphic in the shape of the club’s famous red vee in Church Square.
Fellow Saints stars Paul Wellens, Jamie Foster, Gary Wheeler joined council leader Marie Rimmer, deputy leader Barrie Grundewald and town centre cabinet member Andy Bowden at the unveiling.
The ‘Love Saints – Love St Helens’ has seen posters and decorations adorn the town centre, while specially designed pedestrian signs and smaller floor graphics are visible in many town centre streets.
Coun Bowden said: “It was the high point of a unique, fun campaign that’s got a really serious message – about supporting our hard-pressed town centre retailers.”
Local retailers visited by the players included Tyrers, Greenhalghs, HCUK, St Mary’s Market, B&M Bargains, Le Frog Bistro, Argos, Marks and Spencer, HMV, BHS, Thorntons, Jones & Hoffman, The Mens Room, Millets, Wilkinsons, OD’s, Fleurs Florist and Colours Restaurant.
