Councillors in St Helens have voted to axe funding for school crossing patrols from next summer.

A consultation exercise on proposals by cash-strapped town hall chiefs to withdraw funding was held earlier this year.

Only 780 people responded to the consultation.

The authority says withdrawing funding will help them make savings of £20.6m by 2020.

The plan was voted through by councillors on Wednesday evening.
