THE fire service has announced it will soon only carry out home fire safety checks on the highest risk homes.

From July, local firefighters will only fit free smoke alarms in the highest risk areas and for the most vulnerable people in society - because of Government funding cuts.

Deputy chief fire officer Phil Garrigan said: “We have risk assessed or visited every home on Merseyside and we will still offer and provide free fire safety advice to everyone.”
