A St Helens man has been left almost £700 out of pocket after he was caught dropping a cigarette butt in the town centre.

Adrian Edwards was charged after he was caught by a council official tossing away a fag end in Church Street.

The 37-year-old, of Sidderley Drive, failed to appear before magistrates and was found guilty in his absence.

He was ordered to pay £195 costs, a £440 fine and £44 in victim surcharge.
