POLICE have released this CCTV image of a man who tried to steal cash from a till after posing as a bona fide customer.

The offender approached the checkout at the Co-Op store in Sutton Park Drive at about 3pm on November 29 to pay for a packet of chewing gum, but made a grab for the shop’s takings when the cashier opened the till.

When she stopped him, he fled empty handed. The cashier, 28, from Clock Face, was left shaken and with minor bruising to her hand.

The offender is a young man who was wearing dark clothing and training shoes. He was also wearing what appeared to be a Mercedes Benz baseball cap.

DC Roy Waller, of St Helens CID, said: “I’d ask people to take a good look at the CCTV image and tell us if they recognise the offender. He was wearing a distinctive Mercedes Benz baseball cap so someone must know him.

“It’s unacceptable for anyone to try to steal other people’s hard-earned money. Thankfully, the victim was not hurt and nothing was stolen but she was left shaken and should not have to go through that while doing her job.”
