Police officers stopped two men who fled a St Helens restaurant after failing to pay the bill for a slap-up lunch.

Officers were called to Ormskirk Street by the restaurant manager who gave chase to the pair.

They were eventually collared in a nearby street and immediately admitted the offence. Both men, who were with a young child, offered to settle the £35 bill.

The manager of the restaurant, which has not been named, accepted the offer and the men were let off with a verbal ticking off from police.

Five CCTV cameras were used to locate and follow the pair with officers being kept updated as to where they were until they could be detained.
