ST Helens firefighters were called upon to tackle a blaze after an electrical fault caused a car to catch fire on the motorway.

A crew from Newton-le-Willows Fire Station was called to the northbound carriageway of the M6 - between junctions 22 and 23 - shortly after 9.30pm last Thursday (July 11).

They used one hose reel to extinguish the flames and a section of the boot door was left severely damaged.

Watch manager George Jennings reported: “Due to the rapid response of the crew we managed to save the vehicle.”
