A senior St Helens councillor has been reappointed as Merseyside’s deputy police commissioner.
Coun Sue Murphy first joined police commissioer Jane Kennedy’s office in August 2015 and has spearheaded her Victim Care Merseyside service which has improved the support on offer to vulnerable people on Merseyside.
She has also led many of the Commissioner’s community safety initiatives.
The Commissioner proposed Sue’s reappointment after being re-elected in May.
This proposal was taken to the board who scrutinise the Commissioner’s work, the Police and Crime Panel, who in turn carried out a confirmation hearing with Coun Murphy.
The panel have now formally approved Coun Murphy reappointment.
Jane said: “Sue has been a committed and effective Deputy who has driven real improvements in the care for victims of crime since I appointed her last August.
“I’m pleased that the Police and Crime Panel have approved my proposal for Sue to continue leading on this important work. I look forward to working with her over my second term in office and continuing to make a difference in the lives of people who have been affected by crime.”
Sue said: “I’m delighted that the Commissioner has asked me to continue in the role of Deputy Police Commissioner for Merseyside and it is great news that this has been formally approved by the Police and Crime Panel today.
“It’s been a privilege and honour to serve the people of Merseyside and work with some fantastic partners over the last 10 months and I am passionate about continuing to work to improve the services that offer to support to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities through the Commissioner’s Victim Care Merseyside service.”
Sue was appointed last August following an open selection process which saw seven people apply for the part-time position and four people interviewed.
The interview process was independently observed by the Chair of the Police and Crime Panel, Cllr Christina O’Hare, before being reviewed at a meeting of the full Panel.
Since being appointed Sue has deputised for the Commissioner when necessary, as well as taking responsibility for increasing the use of restorative justice in the region and the development of community remedies - giving victims of low-level crime and anti-social behaviour a say in the punishment of the offender and putting victims at the heart of the criminal justice system.
In her previous roles at St Helens Council, Sue Cllr Murphy has chaired the St Helens Community Safety Partnership, the Priority Families Board and was also a member of the Local Safeguarding Children’s Board, the Youth Offending Service Management Board and the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) Strategic Board.
Sue works in the Commissioner’s office three days a week and earns £31,800 per annum.
