A former soldier from Garswood killed himself in bizarre circumstances, an inquest has heard.

Eric O’Shaughnessy died from carbon monoxide poisoning at his Abinger Road home.

The hearing, held at St Helens town hall on Friday (October 2), was told the 37-year-old rigged up a system to kill himself using household barbecues.

The inquest also heard how Mr O’Shaugnessy - who was single and had no children - had left a note explaining his intention to end his own life.

Mr O’Shaugnessy had spent time in the armed forces but was currently out of work.

Coroner Christopher Sumner ruled he had taken his own life.
