Labour officials have elected Conor McGinn to succeed Dave Watts as their candidate in St Helens North.
Mr McGinn is a seasoned political operator and currently works as a senior advisor to Vernon Coaker, the shadow defence secretary.
He secured the position after a lengthy hustings meeting at St Helens town hall on Sunday afternoon.
Previously, the married dad-of-one had impressed party activists during hundreds of one-to-one meetings with his intellect and commitment Labour politics.
He saw off competition from an unusually strong field of candidates, including council leader Barrie Grunewald and former mayor Andy Bowden.
