Bus fares in St Helens are set to be slashed after Stagecoach announced it would roll out a new flat rate fee across the town.

Passengers in Liverpool already enjoyed the single fare while prices in St Helens vary according to the route.

The changes mean a single journey will cost £2, saving up to 90p per journey.

Anyone aged under 19 pays just £1 for a one-way trip.

The fare changes come into effect on May 1.

Elisabeth Tasker, Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire managing director, said: “We recognise the importance of providing a reliable and affordable bus service option for customers and we’re delighted to be increasing savings even further for passengers in Wirral and St Helens.

“Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire was recently voted the best bus service in England in terms of value for money and we’re continuously reviewing fares to offer the most competitive prices for all our journeys.

“This is great news for bus users and we’re keen to push these savings out to all of our passengers across the region.”
