Police are warning residents to be aware of bogus officials after two people searched an elderly woman’s home.

Merseyside Police are appealing for information after a 70-year-old woman let a man and a woman posing as bogus officials into her home on Mullins Avenue in Newton-le-Willows between 1pm and 3pm on May 23.

They then carried out a search of the upstairs but are not thought to have taken anything.

Detective Inspector Ian Hussey said: “It is not believed that anything was taken in this instance but we are keen to make the community aware that there are people who will try target the vulnerable members of our society for their own financial gain.

“We would always advise people to be vigilant when answering the door to strangers. Always ask for identification and check the details you are given. A legitimate caller won’t mind if you need to check the details.

“The community can also play their part by looking out for their neighbours and reporting any suspicious behaviour.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 101 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
