A popular St Helens attraction is again in the running for a prestigious Merseyside award.

Darkstar Ultimate Laser Arena, of Central Street, has been short-listed at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards.

The laser tag venue has been nominated in the Small Visitor Attraction category, which it won previously in 2012.

St Helens Council leader Coun Barrie Grunewald has commended the venue for its part in attracting tourism to the town.

Coun Grunewald said: “Everyone at Darkstar deserves special praise for the tremendous job they are doing in continuing to offer a unique gamer tag experience that continues to bring a great number of visitors to St Helens.

“The fact that they are looking to win this award again speaks for itself. I would like to wish them the very best of luck.”

Darkstar, which is highly rated on review website Trip Advisor, has attracted tourists from across Europe.

Visitors take part in laser tag matches against up to 40 people, while the venue has also seen a rise in the number of children’s parties, stag and hen dos.

Mustafa Ben-Yousef, managing director of Darkstar, said: “We are delighted to be nominated for this award. Judging from our positive customer feedback forms, people seem to really enjoy the Darkstar experience.

“I am immensely proud of our young and enthusiastic team who enable Darkstar to go from strength to strength.”

The awards ceremony takes place at Liverpool’s St George’s Hall on Thursday May 19.
