A SUSPECTED arson attack at the old Windle City social club sent huge plumes of thick black smoke billowing across town.

Crews from Parr Stocks and Whiston Fire Stations were both called to a ferocious blaze at the unoccupied City Road venue shortly before 6pm on Saturday (June 10).

Shortly after their arrival at the scene, the crews requested the help of a third crew.

This picture, sent in by a Reporter reader, shows firefighters tackling the blaze at the single-storey building, while a group of youngsters look on.

Firefighters used three hose reels and one main branch jet to bring the blaze under control.

But the building, which consisted of an open-plan social club area and changing rooms, was left severely damaged by the flames.

A joint investigation into the cause of the blaze has since been launched by the fire service in conjunction with the police.
