Suited and booted giant penguins added a seasonal feel to the town’s Church Square shopping area as they greeted families starting their Christmas shopping.

And a festive brass band soundtrack helped to keep those happy feet tapping as dozens of youngsters came to take a beak at the feathery festivities.

The event – which took place on the same day that Tyrers opened its Christmas grotto - was just one of the festive attractions being staged by St Helens Council during the run-up to Christmas.

Upcoming events include the arrival of Thomas the Tank Engine, a Santa Dash and the arrival of real reindeer.
