AN amateur baker from St Helens has won a place in the final of a regional cake making contest judged by TV’s Paul Hollywood.
Amber Bateman will mix it with 11 other talented cooks in the Great Merseyside Bake-Off.
The contest is the brainchild of master baker Hollywood, who shot to fame as the judge on BBC’s Great British Bake-off.
The final bake off will take place during the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival launch weekend, which is set to take place in Sefton Park from on September 1 and 2.
Denise Harris, managing director of the festival organisers SK Events, said: “The standard of entries was exceptional; our judges had a very difficult task to whittle it down to just 12 finalists. Congratulations to the finalists, who will get to bake for Paul Hollywood and a big thank you to everyone for taking the time to enter the competition.”
The judging panel, tasked with selecting the final 12 contestants, includes Robin Benson from John Lewis Liverpool ONE, Stacey Moore from Typhoo, Leanne Campbell and Graham Sarath from Juice FM and Linda Kelly from SK Events.
A festival spokesman added: “The winner of the ‘Great Merseyside Bake Off’ will be chosen by Paul Hollywood at the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival.
“As part of the prize, the winning baker will be invited, with a guest, to attend the prestigious Liverpool Food and Drink Awards, where they will be presented with an award in front of Merseyside’s top food and drink talent.
“The winner’s recipe will also be featured as ‘cake of the week’ at the John Lewis café in Liverpool ONE.
“As well as playing host to the final ‘Bake Off’ in Paul Hollywood’s search for Merseyside’s best amateur bake off, the Liverpool Food and Drink Festival launch event will feature a real ale beer festival, master classes, wine tasting and street food sampling.
“There will be celebrity chef demonstrations from Lisa Faulkner, Aiden Byrne, Tom Kitchin, The Fabulous Baker Brothers and Norman Musa.”
