More than 50 jobs are set to be created when a new Marks and Spencer Simply Food store opens in Prescot next month.

The new 8,500 sq ft store is set to open its doors for the first time at the Cables Retail Park at 10am on October 1.

Prescot councillor Carl Cashman said the jobs were extremely welcome - particularly if local people are recruited - but admitted that the store could have a negative knock-on effect on the town centre.

He said: “It’s fantastic. It’s been long overdue. People have been waiting for this to happen for at least a year.

“It will provide competition for Tesco but people still need to go into Prescot town centre. I’m happy to see M&S arrive but cautious about the potential impact on the town centre.”

More than 4,500 food and drink lines will be on sale inside the store, along with a selection of flowers, cards and gift wrap.

Customers will also be able to buy speciality breads, pastries and cakes from an in-store bakery and enjoy a coffee at a new 50-seat café.

M&S Simply Food Prescot will also offer the Shop Your Way service, giving customers the choice of ordering from M&S.com in-store or online.

Store manager Stuart Williams said: “We are delighted to be opening an M&S Simply Food at Cables Retail Park and I am looking forward to welcoming customers into the store.

“M&S Simply Food Prescot will provide local customers with a great new shopping experience, with a wide selection of quality M&S food, flowers cards and gift wrap, as well as a 50-seat M&S Café and in-store bakery.”
