The store is based at the former Horseshoe pub on Windy Arbour Road and attracted 50 applications from jobseekers.

Tesco bosses used word of mouth to advertise the positions exclusively to jobseekers living in the Whiston area.

Store manager Colin Mason said: “I was thrilled with the response we received to our recruitment drive.

“In this time of economic uncertainty, it is great that we are able to create jobs for our local community and help get people back into work.

“I am really pleased with my new team and I’m looking forward to working with my new staff.
