It’s often said that it’s easier to build a 100k supercar than it is to build a competitive city car and Toyota would doubtless agree.
Building in quality, safety, convenience, comfort and reliability while at the same time screwing prices down is a tough act to pull off convincingly and there is no shortage of manufacturers who have tried and failed.
With its Aygo, however, Toyota has hit on a winning formula and it’s one that the somewhat better equipped Go! model doesn’t deviate from too radically.
All versions of the Aygo, including this Go! model, get the same 67bhp 1.0-litre engine and were you to rely on the published 0-60 figures, you’d probably assume that with a showing of 14 seconds, the Aygo Go! was about as racy as a Gordon Brown stand-up routine.
That doesn’t tell the half of it though. Geared low, the Aygo steps off the line smartly and in town the 0-20mph figure is far more important.
With satellite navigation, alloy wheels and rear privacy glass, the Aygo Go! lifts itself above the typical stripped-out city car specification yet Toyota has managed to keep the prices reasonable.
Things do start to add up when you go for an automatic gearbox and air conditioning but such are the Aygo’s tiny ongoing running costs that it’ll still be an easy car to fit into a modest budget.
It’s no longer in the first flush of youth but the Aygo still sets the bar against which all city cars are measured.
