A mum-of-four from St Helens is taking time out from her hectic schedule to organise a fundraising strawberry tea party for Breast Cancer Care.

Dawn Woods, of Blackbrook, is set to host the event at Chain Lane Community Centre from 1pm on July 26.

She was inspired into action by the sad loss of her father-in-law, Keith, who succumbed to cancer earlier this year.

She said: “I’ve always wanted to organise a fundraising event and I think the death of my father-in-law kickstarted me into action. My mum has had a breast cancer scare too - so it’s a cause that’s close to my heart.

“I’m a bit nervous because I’ve never organised anything like this before but it should be a great day. There’ll be 20-plus stalls, games for children, a bouncy castle, morris dancing, a tombola and raffles and face painting.

“Every penny we raise will be match-funded by both my husband John’s employers, DHL, and Barclays - where my sister Jane works. We’re hoping to raise at least £500.”

There will also be refreshments available, an arts and crafts stall and plenty of delicious home baking. Entry will cost just £1 for adults and 50p for children.

Dawn, 38, of Longridge Avenue, added: “I chose to raise money for Breast Cancer Care because they’re not just about research, but also supporting patients.”

.- everything from phone calls to head scarves.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the support I’ve received so far and the generosity of local people. I put an advert asking for teddy bears for a teddy tombola on Facebook and have been sent about 100 now!”

Georgie Burchell, Breast Cancer Care’s strawberry tea fundraising officer, said: “We’re so grateful to Dawn for holding a strawberry tea in aid of Breast Cancer Care. We rely on supporters like Dawn to ensure we can continue to provide our vital emotional support network for free.

“We help thousands of people to find a way to live with, through and beyond breast cancer. With one in eight women developing breast cancer in their lifetime, there has never been such an urgent need for our support services.”

Breast Cancer Care’s strawberry tea campaign runs until August 31.
