Newton Medical Centre in Newton-le-Willows has been awarded the ‘Excellence in Supporting Patients’ prize at the Leading Healthcare Awards 2021.

During the pandemic, the surgery – which is run by SSP Health which also manages two other GP practices in St Helens – created Project CARe (COVID-impact Assessment & Response Project).

The initiative by the surgery’s Lead GP, Dr Olukayode Adeeko, was aided by medical placement students from the University of Liverpool. The project virtually assessed patients at risk of direct or in-direct impacts of COVID-19 and provided practical help when required.

The project is in line with a guideline from The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence which aims to identify, assess and manage the long-term effects of COVID-19, often described as ‘long COVID’. It makes recommendations about care in all healthcare settings for adults, children and young people who have new or ongoing symptoms four weeks or more after the start of acute COVID-19. It also includes advice on organising services for long COVID.

It is the second award in a year for the SSP Health practice on Belvedere Road, after being named Practice Of The Year by the University’s GP Society for the ongoing support that the surgery gives to medical students.

SSP Health’s Chief Executive David Parry said: “Huge congratulations to Dr Adeeko and the team at Newton Medical Centre for this national recognition.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that GP practices across the country have been working flat out to ensure they give excellent healthcare to their patients, as well as keeping them and staff safe from the virus.

“To be able to initiate extra safeguards to monitor patients and the long-term effects of Coronavirus is an outstanding achievement and an example of how our practices are able to focus on patient care while our admin teams take care of surgery back office requirements.

“We would also like to thank the students who come for placements at SSP Health. They gain valuable experience of working in primary care but quite clearly give something back too.”

Leading Healthcare Awards said: “From all the team at Leading Healthcare, we also want to send out a big thank you to all the fantastic projects, innovations and initiatives that submitted an entry, as well as our judges panel and everyone who took part in the process and got involved. It’s always fascinating to see what the present – and the future – holds for healthcare.”
