John Hatton, from Sutton Manor, enjoyed a 28 year career teaching A-level maths at a number of colleges such as Carmel College and Cronton Sixth Form College after being a student at Carmel himself.

John started Maths6 in October 2020. The impact of school closures due to the coronavirus lockdowns would inevitably result in more students looking for A-level maths tuition.

He said: “I know working from home creates challenges, don’t get me wrong but I think that the last 12 months has changed the landscape for how we can deliver education and the current cohort of young learners have fully embraced the potential of high-quality remote learning.

“I took a big step into the unknown when I resigned in October half-term. The first year in a new business is really difficult but I feel I have come on loads with it and I am really proud of what I have achieved in such a short time.”

Maths6 comes from a subject which John is deeply passionate about and this gives him the opportunity to share his experience of teaching maths with others.

Raising maths standards is something which is on the Government's agenda and John added “It’s (maths) a statement of intelligence, it’s a statement that you’ve got really good thinking skills, independent skills and your problem solving is great.”

John has embraced the use of technology during the past year and Maths6 can be found on most social media sites and means that he can share Maths6 far and wide for people to access wherever they may be.

“Tutoring used to be local, you had to drive to people’s houses. Whereas delivering it online means that our audience is arguably global now. One of the students I teach at the moment lives in Ipswich, how good is that? That’s amazing.”

“It’s making private tuition more affordable and accessible to a wider cohort than ever before.”

John hopes that Maths6 will be the agency that people will go to if they need tutoring or additional support.
